How do I add page numbers to a PDF online?

Open the PDF in Sealique, choose the position, format, starting number and font size; a numbered copy lands in your library, ready for a digital signature.

Merged annexes, minutes with a cover page, a scanned bundle for a tender: page numbers make a document citable and show when a page is missing. The tool draws them on the server in the position and format you choose.

Key facts

  • Add page numbers on Sealique places a number on every page or a range, included with an account, with no card and no watermark.
  • Six positions (top or bottom; left, centre or right), three formats (1, 1 / 12, Page 1 of 12), a starting number and a font size from 6 to 36 points.
  • Numbers are drawn as real text, so they are selectable and searchable, and rotated pages are numbered the right way up.
  • The numbered PDF is saved in your library as a new document; the original stays untouched.
  • A numbered document can then be merged, protected or sealed with a PAdES digital signature.

How are the numbers placed?

For every selected page the tool measures the visible page box and its rotation, draws the label at the chosen corner or centre with the chosen margin, and overlays it on the page on Sealique servers. Because the overlay follows the rotation, a landscape page inside a portrait file is numbered the right way up.

Number before you sign

Page numbers change the file, so add them before the PAdES digital signature is applied. The sealed PDF then carries the numbers, the verification ID and the QR code that let anyone verify it online.

Questions people ask

Can numbering start at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number; Page 3 of 14 formats count from it, which is useful for bundles split across files.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Type the pages to number, for example 2-20; the pages left out keep no number and the count still includes them.

Will the number cover existing text?

The number is drawn in the margin you choose (12 mm by default); increase the margin or change the corner if the page already has a footer.

Are the numbers real text?

Yes. They are drawn as text in Helvetica, so they can be selected, searched and read by screen readers.

Does it cost anything?

No. It is included with a Sealique account: no card, no watermark, no daily limit.
